In last post we talked about the positive and negative impacts on switching from windows to linux, and we found that depending on your level of usage it could go either way. During that session one of my friend asked me that, "okay, i will go with linux, but what will i do for windows alternatives? from where i could get that? what about my browsers? my wordprocessors and all other things i do in windows?"
I can say that his question was purely relevant and on perfect time, yes, we had ages in which we believed that windows is computer and the colored 4 tiles(now its blue, yes i know that) is the logo of computer company, many may laugh but yes, it was like that.
So, in this post im trying to answer all his doubts, hoping that you will correct me if i go wrong (and probably it may happen)
A person with basic computing use windows media player, Ms Office, windows photo viewer, mozilla or chrome and some may use IE, those with kids might need ms paint (coz thats the starting point for many) and here comes the mighty yet useful, note pad
So let me start with Windows Media player, frankly, i dont use windows media player much, instead i use vlc or kmplayer for playing movies and music. and i do believe that you dont use it either, coz many hd movies comes with .mkv format and WMP cant deal with that. Here, linux comes with your windows favourite VLC and some other nice video player, i would recommend VLC
This the part where i found some difficulty, i use microsoft office 2010 in my desktop and its really nice where as the openoffice or libreoffice isnt upto mark,i meant, i never liked libreoffice at all, may be its because of my prejudice but i never liked it. However, i must admit that libreoffice and openoffice can be a best alternative for MsOffice and 85% of you will like it. so smile, :)
Photoviewer, ah yes, linux comes with standard photoviewer however if you want much more features you could easily migrate to shotwell, and everyone will love it, its a very nice software for photo library management
everyone use their computer to browse in the internet, and linux do support major browsers like mozilla firefox, chrome and my other flavours of them (like iceweasel and chromium)
Many of you might had an experience with photoshop, the thing which could transform you from 'you' to rockstar, and for them, linux have many better alternatives, but my favourite ? well its GIMP
who doesnt need a sleek, simple yet powerful wordprocessor, and that what notepad is there in windows, but here, in linux, we have many, from the powerful shell text editor vi to gedit, leafpad, etc etc
Many of the linux distros comes with standard software center, so play with it, and get your toys, :)
and for those who want windows applications at any cost, you could go to winehq.com and get your assistance there, and let me remid you, Google and bing are always your friends, dont hesitate to ask :)
