A week with windows 10

This month started with lots of speculations over the new software release of the software giant Microsoft’s  new product. In which we discussed how it gonna be, whether the rumors are correct, or the leaked screenshots are fake and then at the last, what its name going to be?.
Then on the releasing day, the Microsoft named it WIndows10 which is an element of surprise for us, Yes, we didnt expected it to be 10, we expected it to be 9 or One (thanks to Xbox One and Onedrive  :)) but then after the launch, within 24 hours or may be 25 (i believe so) microsoft rolled out the technical preview version of it.
When i went to the insider program, they warned me that i should not use this preview in my primary device, as it could end up in grave due to several bugs and unstability, but i must say that i’ve been using this release for past week (almost) in my test device, which is powered by an intel atom processor and a 1gb ram, and yes, i installed the 64 bit version (which demands 2gb) on this puny device.
As im using this same for past one week and i did tested it on a pc with 2.6ghz clockspeed and a 2gb ram equipped with an nvidia gt 210, i must say that this release isnt buggy as they say, and i would like to state that this is a stable release.

1.START MENU

In this version as you can see in the screenshots below, you have the control to chose the view of start menu, you have two choices for that, you can either have the typical start menu with metro apps on side line or you can have the windows 8.1 start menu.

Screenshot (4)Screenshot (2)
to change the looks of start menu all you have to do is right click on tastbar and select the check box as given in screenshot below
Screenshot (6)
after changing the settings you have to logout and login to make the changes that you’ve given.

2.The Task new

This is something what we had experienced from windows8 onwards but whats really new in this windows10 edition? well, in this edition you will get a search button in taskbar which could even get the results for you from web as it is integrated with bing (for obvious reasons :) )
Screenshot (7)
what you see above is the search menu in windows10 which is capable of searching globally and locally.
Screenshot (10)
and yes, you can have the search in charm menu also. i do believe that this is inspired from ubuntu’s unity desktop, but this is so nice to know that microsoft are adapting the features from its opponents like apple and linux, which i can assure you with the next feature.

3.DESKTOP OVERVIEW

This is one of the features which gained lots of fans in linux and apple, however windows lovers couldnt get the taste of it, but dont worry fellas, its on in windows10.
Screenshot (11)
Task new, thats what microsoft calls this, allows users to add multiple desktops and the overview of the running apps, which is quiet useful for multitasking people.

There are lots of features other than those mentioned here, and we will do that on next posts and stay tuned :)

stuck at boot? dont panic! :)

Whats the best way to ruin a person's day, who do intercourse with computers? well, damage his pc, so that he may die due to desperation
As i said above, a broken computer is a nightmare for any computer lovers, and today morning i landed into such a disastrous thing.

I was using my computer for till last night without any problem, any this morning when i tried to turn on, the green light just flashed and the cpu fan just moved and thats it, after that there was no response. I tried to turn on several times, but i wasnt lucky, it didnt turned up.

So the first thing i concluded was my SMPS got damaged, and then the next moment i realised that what i concluded was absolutely ridiculous, as my cpu light got flashed and fan made a rotate, power was clearly transferring. Then i thought about mother board failure, and almost believed it,but then, i just gave a thought that what if the CMOS got altered? so why not reset it?

This blue thing is the jumper

What i did for resetting CMOS of my Asus P5 KPL-AM/PS mother board is by removing the CMOS jumper, and place it on 2nd and third pin for 5 seconds so that it will get short and reset, then i placed it back on the old position, and plugged all the pins back and turned it on, voila.it turned on.

Some of you might have a CMOS clear button, if thats case, press it for 5 seconds then CMOS gets reset, and if you cant see that then remove your bios battery and invert its positive and negative for few seconds (almost 5) and then place it back and switch your pc on.

While turning it on, get into your bios and choose load default settings, and after that, well buy me a beer :D

Alternatives of windows softwares

In last post we talked about the positive and negative impacts on switching from windows to linux, and we found that depending on your level of usage it could go either way. During that session one of my friend asked me that, "okay, i will go with linux, but what will i do for windows alternatives? from where i could get that? what about my browsers? my wordprocessors and all other things i do in windows?"

I can say that his question was purely relevant and on perfect time, yes, we had ages in which we believed that windows is computer and the colored 4 tiles(now its blue, yes i know that) is the logo of computer company, many may laugh but yes, it was like that.

So, in this post im trying to answer all his doubts, hoping that you will correct me if i go wrong (and probably it may happen)

A person with basic computing use windows media player, Ms Office, windows photo viewer, mozilla or chrome and some may use IE, those with kids might need ms paint (coz thats the starting point for many) and here comes the mighty yet useful, note pad

So let me start with Windows Media player, frankly, i dont use windows media player much, instead i use vlc or kmplayer for playing movies and music. and i do believe that you dont use it either, coz many hd movies comes with .mkv format and WMP cant deal with that. Here, linux comes with your windows favourite VLC and some other nice video player, i would recommend VLC

This the part where i found some difficulty, i use microsoft office 2010 in my desktop and its really nice where as the openoffice or libreoffice isnt upto mark,i meant, i never liked libreoffice at all, may be its because of my prejudice but i never liked it. However, i must admit that libreoffice and openoffice can be  a best alternative for MsOffice and 85% of you will like it. so smile, :)

Photoviewer, ah yes, linux comes with standard photoviewer however if you want much more features you could easily migrate to shotwell, and everyone will love it, its a very nice software for photo library management

everyone use their computer to browse in the internet, and linux do support major browsers like mozilla firefox, chrome and my other flavours of them (like iceweasel and chromium)

Many of you might had an experience with photoshop, the thing which could transform you from 'you' to rockstar, and for them, linux have many better alternatives, but my favourite ? well its GIMP

who doesnt need a sleek, simple yet powerful wordprocessor, and that what notepad is there in windows, but here, in linux, we have many, from the powerful shell text editor vi to gedit, leafpad, etc etc

Many of the linux distros comes with standard software center, so play with it, and get your toys, :)

and for those who want windows applications at any cost, you could go to winehq.com and get your assistance there, and let me remid you, Google and bing are always your friends, dont hesitate to ask :)

Windows and Linux; A noob's view

Using linux is like driving a muscle car, you may have to drift it on hard corners, but it is assured that you will get enthralling experience on straight ways

While i was talking about linux and its advantages to my friend, who was a windows user for a long time, she fired me a question that what are the differences between Windows and a Linux distribution? or what are the disadvantages of Linux?

Well, now this is a very tight question, i cant be one sided, as she is new to this i should not exaggerate the advantages of linux nor on windows. So here is what i  found out.

1.Access Level

Linux gives full access to source codes and you could do any modification to it, but in windows, eh, unless you belong to elite group, you cant get a glimpse of it.

This is some thing windows users never heard of, some might argue that SuperUser (SU) in linux is same as that of 'administrator' in windows, but thats a big NO.

if you didnt liked the desktop environment, you are using you could easily switch to other desktop environment, some might not understand by the word desktop environment, i cant blame them, coz windows doesnt offer any feature like this, if you want Mac Os's environment (iam just giving an example) you could easily get it by installing few docks, some desktop tweaking, and arranging window button lay out and theme. Of course, windows users might know all these things, and they do this according to their will by installing these things, but they were never capable (may be a poweruser could) of rearranging the window button layouts, which is a noobie thing in linux.

You could install any desktop environment by adding a suitable repository (google it) and with a command “sudo apt-get install environment name”. and this is a mere example. You could do almost anything with this SU power.

Do you ever imagined about removing windows photo viewer and installing another thing? or windows media player? No, you cant. To be precise this SuperUser  is a SuperMan, hope that defines it. :)

2.Licensing

Any programmer can give you a lecture on program licensing, with a Linux-GPL you can modify any program, re-publish it or even sell it (as long as you publish the source code). But with a Microsoft license what you could do? well, none of the above, end of the story :D

Also with a Linux License you could install it on as many linux systems you want, but on Windows, if you bought a 3 user pack, you could install only on three systems and thats it.

3.Software Support

This may lead to some serious conflicts, being a current window user, i do have a
feeling that linux dont have a successful alternatives or versions for most of the windows softwares, for example, adobe products, microsoft live writer, games and other things.

How ever, the linux users do have an option to use wine (which runs few windows apps in linux) and virtual box, using which we could  run windows and its softwares (this depends on your RAM)

4.Hardware Support

One issue, which is in endangered (which is appreciable too) zone is hardware support issue, i still can remember that before 2 years (almost) while i was dealing with ubuntu 12.10 it had some problem with my Dlink usb wifi adapter, it never connects to internet out of box, but then i used he most appreciable feature of linux distribution which is online peer support, i did some searches and found that already one posted about this issue and another one posted with its solution, and am glad to say that it went well. After 6 months, i wiped everything and installed ubuntu 13.04 and i must say that, the adapter worked quiet well. but its so sad that there are few exceptions like suspend and hibernate issue with many laptops.

With Latest Edition of windows everything will work instantly, and if you have some device, for which you dont have a installation disk, the windows device software wizard will do the job for you. I could assure you that, the windows will let you use the full capability of the latest insanely powerful graphic card you just bought, and it is a stand apart feature.

5.Command Line

Many readers may get wrinkles on their forehead by reading this, or they may even think why do we need this? well, a command line is the core of a linux distribution, i cant even imagine a linux distro without a command line, how ever you dont have to be a command line ninja to deal with linux, you can use linux without using command line at all, but that command line gives the icing on top :)

Same goes with windows, however,  microsoft have a tendency to hide the command line from user, without entering cmd  in Run dialog box the user wont even know the existence of command line in windows, how ever, the command line in windows isnt on par with that of Linux.

6.Centralized Software Installation

lets take an example, if you want to install Mozilla Firefox, what will you do in windows? Well, you may go to their website, download the file, and install it. and what if you want to install VLC, you will go to their website and download it. Like wise,  if you want to install any software you have to visit the appropriate downoad link and install it.

Ask me, or any other user how they install software in Linux? well we either use command line (lets, keep that aside for now) or we use centralized Software centres like Synaptic or Several other software centres, where you could find each and every app you need, isnt that beautiful? Everything under a single roof, Quiet charming, isnt it :)

7.Automounting Removable medias

while dealing with linux, some users might find it awkward that you have to mount and unmount the removable media manually, which is totally different from windows which instantly mounts your removable media once you plug it in.

This feature is because of the basic feature of unix, yes it is a multi user os, and it was thought that forcing a user to mount a media may overwrite the user’s files.

Use your brain, On a multiuser system, if everyone had instant access to a disk that had been inserted, what would stop them from deleting or overwriting a file you had just added to the media? Things have now evolved to the point where Linux subsystems are set up so that you can use a removable device in the same way you do in Windows. But it's not so normal. And besides, who doesn't want to manually edit the /etc/fstab file?

8.Run Levels

The title may sound confusing, but this indicates the run level ability of linux, a user could use the command line run level (run level 3) and the Graphic User Interface (run level 5), this is useful when the Xwindow (GUI) is malfunctioning and you want to fix it, and you could do the same by booting into run level 3 and giving login credentials for SuperUser account (root), and fixing the problem , voila, you’ve done it.

In Windows, you will get the command line via safe mode, but however, even with the availability of command line, you could do nothing when it is compared to that of linux command line.

9.Malicious Softwares

While talking about Linux vs Windows, i cant miss the fact that linux is less prone to malicious softwares, its not because linux wont support viruses, as you all might know viruses are softwares which do things without users permissions.

This is where linux stand out, in linux, inorder to perform any administrative tasks, you need superuser permission and the superuser password is not stored in machine, the user have to give it by himself, and this makes the linux less prone to viruses, how ever if you add, certain programs to root permission permanently, i cant say a word, coz there is a high possibility that you may get doomed. :)

while, talking about windows and its compatibility with viruses, well i should not talk anything right?? :D

verdict: I could give anything as a verdict, but as it is your computer and your demands may be different for computing, its really your call. meanwhile, happy computing :)

Kali, an ally for netbook?

Backtrack gave machine guns to kids, and Kali linux adds grenade launcher to it

As i told you before i was looking for a nice distro for my underpowered intel atom netbook. and i tried elementary os luna, ubuntu 14.04, linux mint qiana, lubuntu 13.10 and the windows 7 and 8 (which we dont really count ;) )

The lubuntu was very light in weight but it had a problem which 75% of boys with girl friend knows, it complaints every time that it detects a problem.

Then the Ubuntu, even though  its a nice distribution with all out-of-the-box stuff, i hate that unity desktop and felt that its too mainstream. Well thats a bad decision from me, but among these it might be the one i may go for, if i didnt ended up well with Kali Linux (unfortunately, you dont have a chance dear :D), but still i believe that they could improve boot time by removing all those amazon searching scopes and all those stuffs (seriously, i dont know anyone who searches in unity for things, pathetic, isnt it?)

Then i came up with the most beautiful Elementary Os 0.2, The Luna. It is one of the lightweight distribution sized around 650MB and its a very nice distribution for a basic user, and its environment is very flashy too, ( i do believe that, i mentioned these things in my earlier post). However, being a dabbler in and a toddler in coding i would like to get some tools and IDEs preinstalled, which the elementary doesnt have (ofcourse, it should not have it, coz its aimed towards average users).

As i couldnt deal with what elementary offered, i came with the distribution with large live image which is more than 3GB and which justified the size, the mighty Kali Linux. while talking about kali linux i remember the phrase a well known linux user used in one of the forum and i would like to quote it her, he said "Backtrack gave machine guns to kids, and Kali linux adds grenade launcher to it", when we analyse the tools in kali linux, we have to agree that what he said is correct, Kali Linux is a great tool for penetration testers, but thats not all, its reall a great distro for every day use, it boots up fast (dont expect a 2 sec) and features a very good battery back up, now this machine is powered on for past 2:15 hours with a 80% battery and now iam blogging, reading messages, while clementine is singing for me, and the terminal is downloading some packages, it shows that i still have 58% percent remaining, Impressive, isnt it?

while you dealing with Kali Linux the first thing is that you should give a check to blackmoreops.com they really have a nice article on Kali Linux.

Due to lack in RAM and some limitations in my samsung n150 i requires much time to do penetrations and am just learning it, :) so you can excuse me for that. I will be back with more reviews and ratings from my side, meanwhile you do experiments as well :) happy computing.
